My name’s Pranet Swain. I regularly try to interview local residents with personal perspectives on Aurora’s housing shortage that are usually hard to thoughtfully share through our crowded town hall meetings. I regularly meet interviewees while sitting in on local town hall meetings, volunteering at local homeless shelters, as well as through email request. While I usually stick to publishing interviews with those currently at risk of eviction or homelessness, the publication does include some conversations with those with different perspectives on the crisis. As a disclaimer, all conversations are condensed for clarity and some names have been altered for privacy upon request.

6/15/21 – Josef Barrea

Welcome, Josef, and thank you again for joining us today. Our conversation centers on a vital yet often overlooked aspect of affordable housing in Aurora: the integration of public transportation to enhance accessibility and affordability. Could you begin by sharing your personal story and how it led you to focus on this intersection?

Thank you for having me. My journey into the intersection of affordable housing and public transportation in Aurora began out of necessity. Several years ago, I found myself in a difficult position. I had just secured a job in the city center, near the Aurora Municipal Center, but the housing options in nearby neighborhoods were well beyond what I could afford. The only affordable housing I could find was on the outskirts of Aurora, which posed a new challenge: transportation.

Initially, I thought the long commute would be a minor inconvenience, but it quickly became a significant burden. The cost of commuting, both in terms of time and money, was substantial. It ate into my budget, which was already tight due to high rent, and the hours spent traveling meant less time with my family and for rest. This experience highlighted a critical gap in our city’s approach to affordable housing—it’s not just about the cost of rent but also about where housing is located in relation to jobs, amenities, and public transportation.

Driven by this realization, I began to advocate for a more integrated approach to planning affordable housing in Aurora, one that considers access to reliable public transportation as a key component of affordability. I’ve attended city hall meetings, spoken with local officials, and collaborated with advocacy groups to push for policies that link housing development with transportation planning.

Interviewer: Your story powerfully illustrates the broader implications of integrating affordable housing with public transportation. How do you see these challenges and solutions playing out across Aurora?

Interviewee: The challenges of integrating affordable housing with public transportation in Aurora are multifaceted. Aurora, with its sprawling layout and diverse communities, from the developments near Buckley Air Force Base to the historic neighborhoods around Colfax Avenue, presents unique challenges for public transportation. Many affordable housing units are located in areas poorly served by public transit, isolating residents from employment opportunities, healthcare, education, and other essential services.

Moreover, the discussions at city hall meetings often reveal a gap between transportation and housing policies. While there are efforts to improve public transit and to increase affordable housing stock, these efforts frequently operate in silos. Bridging this gap is crucial for developing comprehensive solutions that enhance both the affordability and accessibility of housing in Aurora.

One promising approach is the development of transit-oriented developments (TODs) around key transit hubs, such as the Iliff Station or Florida Station on the R Line. These developments can offer residents affordable housing options within easy walking distance of public transit, reducing reliance on personal vehicles and making the city more accessible.

Additionally, enhancing the connectivity and frequency of Aurora’s public transportation network can significantly impact residents’ access to affordable housing. Expanding bus and light rail services to underserved areas, increasing the frequency of service, and ensuring that transit options are safe and reliable can make a substantial difference in how residents access housing, work, and services.

Considering the interconnectedness of these issues, what steps do you believe are necessary to foster a more integrated approach to affordable housing and public transportation in Aurora?

Fostering a more integrated approach requires collaboration across multiple sectors and a commitment to holistic urban planning. Firstly, Aurora needs to prioritize policies that incentivize the development of affordable housing near existing and planned public transit lines. This includes revising zoning regulations to allow for higher density developments in these areas and providing financial incentives to developers who include affordable units in their projects.

Engagement with the community is also essential. Residents of Aurora, especially those who rely on affordable housing, must have a voice in the planning process. Their insights can inform more effective transportation services and housing developments that truly meet the community’s needs. Regular town hall meetings and public forums can facilitate this dialogue, ensuring that policies reflect the lived experiences of Aurora’s residents.

Investing in infrastructure is another critical step. Enhancing the physical connectivity between affordable housing developments and public transportation nodes through improved sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian crossings can make a significant difference in how accessible and usable the transit system is for all residents.

Lastly, ongoing collaboration between the city’s housing and transportation departments, alongside external stakeholders like developers, non-profit organizations, and transportation advocacy groups, is vital. By working together, these entities can ensure that Aurora’s growth is both inclusive and sustainable, providing affordable housing options that are truly accessible through public transportation.

As we look toward the future, what message do you hope to convey to city officials, developers, and the community about the importance of this integrated approach?

The message I hope to convey is one of interconnectedness and opportunity. Affordable housing and public transportation are not separate issues; they are deeply interrelated, each impacting the other. By adopting an integrated approach, Aurora has the opportunity to become a model for sustainable, inclusive urban development.

To city officials, I urge a commitment to policies that bridge the gap between housing and transportation. This means not only planning for the future but also addressing the current needs of Aurora’s residents, ensuring that everyone has access to affordable housing and reliable transportation.

For developers, there’s a chance to innovate and lead in the creation of communities that are both affordable and accessible. By embracing the principles of transit-oriented development and prioritizing inclusivity, developers can contribute to a more equitable Aurora.

To the community, I emphasize the power of advocacy and engagement. Your voice matters in shaping the future of our city. By coming together to support integrated solutions for affordable housing and public transportation, we can build a city that reflects our shared values of equity, accessibility, and community.

Thank you for sharing your insights and for your advocacy on behalf of affordable housing and public transportation integration in Aurora. Your work is crucial in moving toward a more inclusive and accessible city for all residents.

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this vital issue. I’m hopeful that through continued dialogue, advocacy, and collaborative action, we can achieve a future where every resident of Aurora has access to affordable, sustainable, and accessible housing options. Let’s keep pushing forward, together.
