Thank you for having me. My journey with affordable housing in Aurora began about five years ago when my family and I were faced with a sudden rent increase that we couldn’t afford. We had been living in the same apartment for years, building a life and community connections that we cherished. The notice of the rent hike felt like a rug was pulled out from under us, and we were thrust into the daunting world of Aurora’s housing market, searching for something we could afford on a tight budget.
The search was exhaustive and disheartening. We encountered waiting lists for affordable housing units that stretched years into the future, and the options available to us were often in poor condition or located in areas far removed from our jobs and our children’s schools. This experience opened my eyes to the depth of the housing affordability crisis in Aurora and the impact it has on families striving for stability.
That sounds incredibly challenging. How did this situation affect your family, and how did you navigate these obstacles?
The uncertainty and stress took a significant toll on us all. My children struggled with the disruption to their routine and the prospect of leaving their school and friends. My partner and I faced sleepless nights trying to figure out a solution, balancing the need to provide for our family with the limited housing options available.
Navigating these obstacles required resilience and resourcefulness.
