When the pandemic hit, one of my jobs was cut back significantly, and suddenly, keeping up with rent became my biggest worry. Every month, it felt like a balancing act—choosing between rent, food, or medical expenses.
The fear of eviction loomed large, especially as temporary moratoriums began to lift. I reached out to local assistance programs, but the demand was overwhelming, and resources were stretched thin. It became clear that many in our community were facing similar hardships, all of us caught in an unending cycle of stress and uncertainty.
This experience pushed me to become more involved in advocating for affordable housing solutions in Aurora. I started attending community meetings, initially virtual, where I shared my story and listened to others. These weren’t official city hall meetings, but they were gatherings where community members came together to support one another and seek collective solutions.
